Why Good Sleep Hygiene is Important When Dealing With PCOD

There’s nothing quite like getting a good night’s rest. Waking up after getting quality sleep makes the day appear brighter, and the energy you receive after getting good sleep is unlike anything else.

While practising good sleep hygiene habits is important for everyone, proper sleep hygiene is vital for women who suffer from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), also known as polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD). Symptoms of PCOS may include infertility, changes in skin and hair health and the development of cysts on the ovaries.

How Sleep Hygiene Benefits PCOD

The relationship between PCOS and sleep is fairly well known in that sleep regulates many of the same systems and functions that are affected by PCOS. Hormones are usually affected by both sleep and PCOD, and this means that women who practice good sleep hygiene may experience less hormone disruption as a result of the condition.

Additionally, sleep allows the body to heal and process food and nutrients. Stress during the day can slow these processes down, leading to poor nutrition and malabsorption.

PCOS may also contribute to weight gain and cardiovascular problems as a result, meaning good sleep hygiene may have the potential to address all of these concerns. When you have more energy after a good night’s rest, you are also more likely to engage in activity throughout the day, thereby lessening your cardiovascular risk further.

PCOS and Insulin Resistance

PCOS may also be associated with insulin resistance and medical conditions like diabetes. Sleep is known to positively impact both of these concerns, so it stands to reason that good sleep hygiene may benefit women who experience PCOS symptoms related to insulin resistance.

It should be noted that diabetes and conditions involving insulin resistance or problems with processing insulin can be very serious. Good sleep does not cure PCOD, and only your doctor can provide recommendations for your health based on your unique medical needs. While proper sleep hygiene is important, so is consulting with your physician about how PCOS and sleep habits are affecting your health.
